Benin city – In commemoration of Democracy Day, members of Edo Civil Society Organizations (EDOCSO), a network of civil society groups in Edo state, on Tuesday in Benin city held a solidarity walk in honour of those who fought for the enthronement of civil rule in Nigeria.
The group which took off the solidarity walk from Benin Museum ground to major roads in the metropolis, expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for the recognition of June 12 as Nigeria’s democracy day.
EDOCSO Coordinator General, Leftist Omobude Agho said May 29th in the history of Nigeria do not reflected democracy day, which according to him is “Nigeria’s Military day”, adding, June 12 is “Nigeria’s People democracy day”.
Leftist Agho who frowned at the political class for their failure to deliver dividends of democracy to citizens, however reaffirmed the group’s call on the federal government not to renew the licenses of Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs).
Agho called for each state in the country to have more than one DISCOs, which he noted would promote competition and would also enhance efficient service delivery to electricity consumers.
Recall President Buhari on June 6th 2016 announced June 12 as Democracy day, and conferment of national posthumous award on Chief MKO Abiola, Gani Fawehimi SAN and others.
